What are DLNA and UPnP?

DLNA and UPnP are networking standards that allow devices in a network to automatically discover each other's presence and control each other. Among others, the standards have been adopted for printers, internet radios, stereo systems and tv sets.

Playback devices that apply to the UPnP-AV standard can be integrated into a Raumfeld system. Likewise, Raumfeld may be controlled by a 3rd party UPnP control point.

Definitions:

  • DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a collaboration of companies in the technology industries. The alliance publishes standards that allow for interoperability between media devices (mostly audio and video) from different manufacturers. In short, appliance with the DLNA standards allows for streaming of audio and video contents from one device in the network to another.
  • UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is an industry standard that allows for automatic recognition and control of devices in an IP-based network. In the DLNA standards, UPnP is used for that purpose.

Components in a UPnP-AV Network:

  • UPnP media server: Provides media in the network and streams it to playback devices (e.g. Raumfeld Base)
  • UPnP control point: Automatically detects UPnP media servers in the network and allows you to browse its contents (e.g. Raumfeld Controller)
  • UPnP media renderer: Plays contents it receives from a UPnP media server (e.g. Raumfeld Speaker, Raumfeld Connector)
